May 2010 - Austin Heroes vs. Dobie Heroes Annual End of Year Soccer match!

May 2010 - Austin Heroes vs. Dobie Heroes Annual End of Year Soccer match! Launch Pad celebrated its third annual indoor soccer event against the Austin Police Department. For the third school year in a row, APD Chief Art Acevedo made time from his very busy schedule to go toe-to-toe against some of Dobie Middle Schools exceptional athletes and interact with the students. Launch Pad students who have worked diligently throughout the school year to improve their attendance, behavior and grades were exempted from morning classes to particiapte in the soccer event. We use this end of year event to show the students that with hard work and improvement comes great reward and fun!   We were also joined by the new APD District Commander, Sergeant Holland.  Fortunately for LP students, they experieced a big win over the APD in the match.  Local news 8 covered the event and our program. To watch the clip of News 8, visit the News 8 Austin link on the front page of our website.  Launch Pad co founder and Executive Director David Contreras thanks Chief Acevedo and the ADP for their continued support in the first picture below!

A successful businessman and gifted musician, Polo brought instruments and music to one of our after school classes to demonstrate to the students and allow them to experience thier creative expression.  The experience was an instant hit for the students as several of them discovered a new love for music! December 2009 - Parent University gets a major boost!

This years Parent University (PU) was another major success!  Despite the cold, rainy night, we had over 180 parents and 180 students show up for a night of education and fun.  Again the largest evening event held on the School campus.  Launch Pad joined forces with Celebration Church who provided 32 student interns to help with promoting and volunteering at the event. The Celebration interns were a key part of the night’s success and fun. THANK YOU Celebration Church!

We used dance and drama to entertain the 180 students. While students were engaging in fun filled team building activites, parents were gathered in the school theater learning from a variety of special speakers such as Rolando Fernandez, an assistant to the City Manager of Austin who brought a powerful testimony of overcoming obstacles and poverty to achieve lasting success through education and perseverance.  We also had the Austin Police Department provide insights to key areas such as domestic abuse and school truency issues. The goals of Parent University were achieved by educating parents about the critical importance of engaging in thier student’s education while at the same time engaging the students in fun filled games teaching them the importance of team building!

LaunchPad After School Program expands into the school cafeteria in year three.  The growth of LaunchPad’s (LP) after-school program has been tremendous over the 2009-2010 school year.  We started our program in Spring 2007 with 7-10 students. Last school year 2008-2009, we ended with an average of 30 students per class.  This school year 2009-2010, we have had as many as 70 students in our after school program! Launch Pad is currently the largest afterschool program on campus holding a steady average attendance of 50 students per class!   Our students come every week eager to learn and actively participdate in discussions.

Launch Pad starts School Year off with a bang!

The 2009 fall semester After-School Program blasted-off with a roar this new school year! Last school year, on our first day we had 12-15 students attend our program, as the school year progressed our program grew to a consistent 30-35 students per class. This year on day one we had 40 students and maintaining every class since then!

The school Principal moved us into the school cafeteria due to our tremendous growth.
Maximizing this new space, we are able to bring innovative media and sound to keep the students engaged and interested.   The venue also has allowed us to utilize team building games at the beginning of our classes to allow the middle schooler’s to burn off some energy!

The most exciting part of this new school year is the launch of our new curriculum,  RESH180.  This curriculum is written by my good friend and team Chaplain for the Oakland Raiders. The NFL Oakland Raiders use this program for all their incoming rookies and it’s also been used throughout the country to train youth with necessary life skills.

Through this program our at-risk students, grades 6th thru 8th are taught how to plan their dreams (set goals), know where they are going (direction for their life) understand self (purpose and destiny) renew their thinking (mindset and behavior) and so much more!   RESH180 will set the important foundation for our core values curriculum later on in the school year.

LaunchPad (LP) kicks-off its new ‘Golf Leadership Program’

LaunchPad (LP) kicks-off its new ‘Golf Leadership Program’ at Dobie Middle school. In partnership with the Physical Fitness Department at Dobie and Callaway Golf, the husband and wife LP team, Kevin and Dhustie Zervakos are leading the development and instruction effort. Mr. & Mrs. Zervackos met with every P.E class at Dobie to introduce the game of golf as a fun and challenging sport while communicating the important life lessons you can learn from the game. Eight to twelve stations consisting of putting and chipping were set-up around the gym for the hands-on demonstrations. The emphasis of certain life “core values” were communicated and demonstrated to show the students how they apply practically in life and on the golf course. The overall response from the student body was that “golf was more fun than they had originally thought”. Close to 200 students participated in the first LP Golf Leadership Program. The program will continue at Dobie and will be taught to every PE class every first and last Monday of each month.
