Maria Hernandez, Middle School Dropout Prevention Specialist
Ms. Hernandez has been key in supporting the Dobie Launch Pad Programs. In her impact story, she makes the statement that she had been looking for an organization for 3 years to come-in to provide some type of after-school program or support to assist her, but had no success until she met David Contreras, Founder of Launch Pad. We were eager to serve at the Middle school where the need was the greatest.

Leo
Leo participated in the Launch Pad After School Program throughout the Spring 08’ semester and also the Summer 08 Outreach Program. When we first met Leo, he was skipping class all the time, making bad personal choices and using his fists to solve his problems. He lives in a single parent home and his mother shared with us that he was being pulled into the gang life and she desperately needed help. Today, Leo is a freshman in high school, making good grades and plays high school football.

Ruth
Ruth has been part of the Launch Pad After School Program at Dobie since its inception in March 2008. She is an 8th grader living in a single parent home. She is a bright young lady with great potential however she was making personal bad choices and was strongly pursued by the local gang leaders to join a gang because as she puts it, “nobody really cares about me!” By working with Ruth, she is learning to be a ‘leader’ and not a follower.
